Transmission, one of the most popular BitTorrent clients for Mac OS X, has reached version 1.51, adding support for Internet Explorer, as well as layout fixes when viewed on an iPhone/iPod touch. These are just a few of the platform-specific changes occurring with the software. Read on for the full scoop and the download link.

Transmission is a BitTorrent client much like Vuze, or uTorrent. The software is open source, while most of the code is licensed under the GNU General Public License with select code licensed under the liberal MIT License.

The lightweight, but powerful BitTorrent client sports a simple, intuitive interface designed to integrate tightly with any OS. It runs natively on Mac OS X, seamlessly configuring your network, banning peers who send corrupted data intelligently, using protocol encryption and built-in Peer Exchange. Everything is done in the background, so users needn't worry about manipulating settings. Whether you want to queue your torrents for maximum performance or throttle their speed during peak periods, Transmission lets you do both. It also allows you to ration commodity efficiently, only slowing down your system when you actually focus on it.

According to the release notes for Transmission 1.51, the development team managed to fix configure script issues with non-gcc compilers and user-defined CFLAGS environment variables, as well as decrease CPU usage in some situations. Also, the BitTorrent client is allegedly more efficient using libcurl when curl 7.18.0 or newer is present.

A Linux specific tweak makes Transmission “play nicely with Ubuntu's new notification server,” according to the changelog, while also adding Pause All and Resume All buttons. On the Web client side, Transmission now has support for Internet Explorer and improved layout when viewed on an iPhone/iPod touch.

One of the more recent releases of Transmission (the first 1.50 beta) added support for Internet Protocol version 6. Internet Protocol version 6 – in short IPv6 – is the next-generation Internet Layer protocol for packet-switched Internetworks and the Internet.
