One of the favorites of Mac BitTorrent clients, Transmission, has recently been updated to include both core changes, as well as Mac-specific additions. A few web client changes have also made their way into the 1.40 release. Read on for the full scoop.

Changes for all platforms include (highlights):

- More accurate bandwidth limits; - Tracker communication uses fewer resources; - Reduce disk fragmentation by preallocating files; - Stability, security, and performance improvements to the RPC/Web UI server; - Support compression when serving Web UI and RPC responses; - Simplify the RPC whitelist. The rest of the core changes ocurring with Transmission 1.40 can be viewed here (full changelog). On the Mac front, developer Eric Petit was able to add an option to automatically update the blocklist weekly, as well as an option to show progress and size for folders in the file inspector tab. Scrollbars now appear correctly when the main window auto-resizes, while the Sparkle framework has been updated to 1.5b6. Sparkle tells Transmission to look for updates (new versions of Transmission) on the Internet by itself.

The developer has also confirmed that the Web Client is now out of beta. The final version has some minor display fixes, while, on the iPhone/iPod touch, launching from the home screen now hides the address bar.

Built from the ground up to be a lightweight, yet powerful BitTorrent client, Transmission sports a simple, intuitive interface designed to integrate tightly with any OS. Transmission runs natively on Mac OS X, seamlessly configuring your network, banning peers who send corrupted data intelligently, using protocol encryption and built-in Peer Exchange. Everything is done in the background, while users needn't worry about manipulating settings.
