Michael Bay, one of the few directors that never hesitate to speak their mind no matter on whose toes they tread, has had a change of heart: the third “Transformers” film has been shot entirely in 3D and will, of course, see a 3D release.

This wouldn’t be that much of a shock if, about a year or so ago, Bay hadn’t been speaking against 3D, saying it was nothing but a “fad” to which he had no intention of giving in.

Moviefone says Bay has changed his mind, suddenly deciding that 3D was the way to go for the last of the “Transformers” franchise as well. The “fad” has become “beautiful.”

“Wow, I read these morons on the internet who think they are in the know. ‘We have problems with our 3-D????’ Really? Come into my edit room and I will show you beautiful 3-D,” Bay wrote in a post on his official website, which has been deleted in the meantime.

“There has never been a live action show that has pushed the boundaries of 3-D like ‘Transformers 3.’ We shot the entire movie with 3-D cameras. I actually loved shooting in 3-D,” Bay also said.

As noted above, this is 180-degree turn from a statement he made in April 2009, Moviefone points out: not only did he say back then that 3D glasses ruined the experience, but he also predicted IMAX would be the way of the future.

“I think 3-D is going to be a fad. I personally don’t like 3-D. The glasses impair your peripheral vision. If the studios want to push any technology, it should be IMAX. That’s much more immersive,” he said at the time.

To make this more of a “words that come to bite you in the you-know-what later” scenario, Bay revisited the statement a few months later, stressing that his movies would never get the 3D treatment because they would be too tiresome on the viewer.

“I prefer the flat screen. I’m not jumping to do 3-D at all – it’s a pain in the neck to shoot it and I actually like the flat image,” he said.

“I’ve heard that some people can’t even see 3-D and, moreover, that a major side effect of watching it is feeling exhausted. Can you imagine how you'd feel watching one of my movies in 3-D?” the famous director added.

On July 1, 2011, we’ll find out.
