Say what you want about Michael Bay and his movies, but one thing is certain: audiences love to see them on the big screen. Despite lukewarm to negative reviews, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” made a killing at the box office in its opening weekend. Figures for the Fourth of July extended weekend are in and, as expected, “Transformers 3” fared excellently at the box office.
Even more, it actually managed to surpass industry estimates,
Deadline points out, and, in the process, become the biggest Fourth of July weekend opening ever.
“Paramount’s latest Transformers: Dark Of The Moon is the giant #1 movie and biggest Fourth Of July opening weekend (3-day and 4-day) ever beating Spider-Man 2’s $88.2M and $115.8M. IMAX broke its global record with the first ever $20M-plus debut ($22.5M global),” Deadline writes.
“Domestically, the pic opened with some 3D-only nighttime sneaks on Tuesday ($5.5M), followed by a full release into 4,013 theaters on Wednesday ($37.7M) and Thursday ($21.4M),” the same publication writes.
At the time of writing, “Transformers” has already surpassed the $115 million threshold at the domestic box office, and it’s bound to make even more money in the following days.
Deadline notes that 60% of the gross is down to 3D. Similarly, “Transformers 3” did better in other countries than in the US, for the mere reason that sequels are more popular here.
“Transformers: Dark Of the Moon shredded a bunch of box office records as it claimed #1 in 57 of the 58 territories where it was released. The movie was the biggest opening of all-time in 7 countries,” Deadline says.
With $416 million in global cume at the end of the first weekend, “TF3 becomes Hollywood’s third highest grossing worldwide debut ever,” the movie-oriented publication notes.
With such excellent results at the box office, no wonder Michael Bay remains unfazed, even after so many years, by the harsh words he gets from movie critics.
