Meant to assist WiFi-enabled devices, including Apple iOS ones

Transcend just announced a new storage device, one that acts as a miniature database for photos, documents, e-books, movies and music files.

The drive is the sort of storage product that doesn't have a monumental capacity, but that comes with the territory.

If this had been a hard drive, it would have had 500 or more GB of storage, but as a flash drive (even if the shape and size doesn't suggest that is what it is) it settled for 64 GB.

That is the same as 28 hours of DVD quality movies or 16,000 songs, give or take.

There are two ways that the StoreJet Cloud, as the wireless drive is called, can be utilized.

One is the standard role of a flash drive unit: when connected to a personal computers, people can drag and drop filer to personalized folders.

The other role is the one suggested by its name: Transcend's device acts as a server, of sorts.

The WiFi wireless connection lets it link, cable-free, to up to 5 Apple iOS-loaded devices, or other consumer electronics with WiFi.

Those 5 can stream media at the same time and there is no need to convert files into an iOS-compatible format for this to be possible.

Transcend built the drive with a rechargeable battery that can last for up to six hours of continuous playback.

The 64 GB StoreJet should already be up for order online, at a price of $299 (223 Euro), along with a half-capacity version (34 GB) at $169 (126 Euro).

Finally, the StoreJet Cloud App is included, this being an all-in-one media player for iPads, iPhones and iPods.

The program lists portable drive contents and has several playback modes, plus multitasking (handles a StoreJet connection and one to an external WiFi access point at once) and can transfer, delete and e-mail files as well.
