With rival companies optimizing their storage offerings both in terms of speed and capacity, Transcend decided it would do the same, so it refreshed its collection of 2.5-inch solid state drives with a new, unspecified controller, while also boosting maximum capacity to 512GB.

As end-users know, solid state drives are becoming increasingly popular because their capacities are growing and their speed and reliability already outmatch those of hard disk drives.

Basically, SSDs can noticeably boost system performance, especially when used as boot drives, and also possess a high endurance because they have no moving parts.

Transcend decided it would improve its 2.5-inch line of consumer SSDs, so it released a whole new collection of them, with capacities of 32GB to 512GB.

The newcomers use the 2.5-inch form factor, have a standard thickness of 9.5mm and are powered by a new controller whose name was, unfortunately, not disclosed.

Also, the company utilized MLC (multi-level cell) NAND Flash memory chips in the drives' construction.

What's more, for communication with the rest of the computer, the company settled for the SATA 3.0 Gbps interface, and the maximum transfer rates are of 260MB/s when reading and 200 MB/s writing.

Other specifications of the electronics include tamper-evident seals and support for the TRIM command, which reduces long-term SSD wear and preserves performance.

The newcomers are supposedly already shipping in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 512GB capacities and even as part of the SSD Desktop Upgrade kit.

This kit includes 3.5-inch mounting brackets, as well as the Acronis True Image HD disk cloning software and SATA data and power cables.

“Featuring storage capacity up to 512GB, currently the highest in the industry, Transcend’s upgraded SSDs are large enough to store operating systems, applications and more,” states the press release.

Unfortunately, the individual prices have not been made public as of yet.
