Transcend Flashes Two New USB Drives: Flashy Colors + Biometric Data Protection

- The JetFlash V35 and the JetFlash 220

By: Alex Vochin, Technology Editor

Transcend is quite a well-known manufacturer of various flash-based devices, whether we're talking about portable storage solutions or various MP3 players, all of them boasting certain aesthetic and functionality-related features that make them stand out from a crowd of similar devices.
And the same can be said about the company's latest offerings, namely the JetFlash V35 and the JetFlash 220 UBS Flash Drives, which provide both very high data storage capacities, as well as some interesting extra-features.

Even if they can house pretty much the same amount of data (the V35 model is available in 1 GB – 8 GB versions, while the 220 in 2 – 8 GB versions), they target very different segments of the consumer market. Thus, the 220 model is aimed primarily at those users for whom the security of their data represents a very important issue, as it incorporates an advanced biometric access system (namely, a fingerprint reader), while providing permanent AES 256- bit encryption for the data stored within its flash "bowels". Moreover, the fingerprint reader can be employed for other purposes as well, since its associated software allows users to login automatically to certain websites (practically, it can work as a standalone fingerprint-authentication unit).

On the other hand, the V35 model is aimed primarily at those fashion-conscious users, who want a little bit of color on their portable storage units. And the V35 really delivers in this particular area, as it is available in 4 very colorful versions, ranging from apple green to cherry red. However, the drive is a lot more than just another colorful and pretty face, as it is accompanied by a Transcend's standard set of security and utilities software suite, including here the PC-Lock function (doubles as a PC Key), the Secret Zip function (password protection of stored files), the favorites and data backup function and many, many more.

Quite obviously, both drives are compatible with the Windows 2000, XP and Vista operating systems, but, unfortunately, are available for now only in Japan, for around 149 US dollars (the 8 GB 220 model) and 141 (the 8 GB V35 model).
