I must admit that if someone told me a few years back that we would be able to store up to 16 GB of data in a device the size of an AA battery, I probably would have thought they were a bit....tech-nuts. However, that's exactly what's happening nowadays,
and the latest announcement regarding such a product comes from Transcend, who has just announced an upgrade to its V60 series of USB flash drives, namely the release of the 16 GB model.
Quite obviously, this particular version of the V60 shares the same external features as the other models from the series. Thus, it's also quite small and portable (61mm x 18.6mm x 9.8mm), but, unlike the other models, its distinctive color is champagne (although that looks more like light orange to me).
Like most of the other drives from Transcend, the V60 also offers users the possibility of installing and running the JetFlash elite software suite directly from the drive, and includes eight time-saving data management functions, including: Website AutoLogin, PC-Lock, Mobile Favorites, Secret-Zip encryption, Mobile E-mail, DataBackup, Online Update and the My JetFlash browser.
And if you were wondering what these applications can do for you, here's a short description, according to the company's own statement:
"- Website AutoLogin: Automatically login to your online accounts
- PC-Lock: Use the JetFlash V60 as a key to lock your computer
- Mobile Favorites: Browse your favorite websites wherever you go
- Secret-Zip Function: Compress and password-protect files using powerful 256-bit AES Encryption
- E-Mail: Use any computer to securely check, save and send email
- DataBackup: Backup, restore and synchronize your mobile data
- My JetFlash: A convenient way to access files on your JetFlash
- Online Update: Download the latest version of JetFlash elite."
Furthermore, as we might have actually imagined, the JetFlash V60 also supports pretty much every operating system out there, including here Windows 98 SE / Me / 2000 / XP / Vista, Mac OS 9.0 / OS X and Linux Kernel 2.4.2 or later, providing seamless data exchange between different operating systems.
The 16 GB V60 is available at Transcend's online shop for around $135 a pop, which is pretty much the average market price for these things. Careful, though, if you don't really need such a large amount of storage space (life and death situation), you should wait until next years, when prices for flash memory are sure to drop (at least in the first two quarters).
We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is
