It seems that 16 GB is be the new milestone in memory cards nowadays, as every major manufacturer of such memory storage solutions is rolling out its own version. Thus, after we've talked about Ritek and Delkin launching last week their 16 GB UDMA Compact Flash memory cards, Transcend has provided some interesting information regarding one of its comparable products (in terms of size, not format).

Thus, the company has announced that its 16 GB SDHC card, which has been relatively quietly rolled-out back in mid-November, will retail for around 139 Euro (200 US dollars), not that bad for a portable storage solution based on the new generation of SD cards (SD 2.0) that support the FAT32 file system format. The 16 GB SDHC is fully Class 6 compliant and features fast data transfer speeds (guaranteed minimum write speed of 6MB/s), which makes it a pretty good solution for today's top-of-the-line image recording devices, whether we're talking about digital photo cameras or camcorders.

And since we're on the subject, it's worth mentioning the fact that the 16GB memory capacity is enough to store over 8,000 high-resolution 7-megapixel JPG photos, just to give you an example. Of course, most top-range digital cameras and camcorders don't actually use the SDHC format (they're CompactFlash compatible)....but that's a whole different story.

The 16GB SDHC card also includes special features such as a mechanical write protection switch that keeps your important data safe from accidental deletion or over-writing. Transcend's SDHC Class 6 series features ECC (Error Correcting Code) to automatically detect and correct errors during data transfer, preventing data corruption and missing files.

Transcend's 16GB SDHC retails price is significantly lower than that of the comparable 16 CF cards announced last week, probably because the targeted consumer segments are also very different, but also less expensiver than other comparable models from its own class, which makes it a relatively interesting choice for this Christmas shopping season.
