Train Fever, a railroad-focused business simulation that was released on Steam, has finally arrived on the Linux platform as well.

Games with trains have always fascinated the gaming community and they have been around for many years. The guy who made this genre famous is Sid Meier, with his Railroad Tycoon. Since then, there have been a number of attempts to capture the users’ imagination, but no studio has managed to do it.

Now, a new studio called Urban Games is trying to do something very similar with their Train Fever title and it looks like they might be able to pull it off. The game has all the ingredients it requires to succeed, it just remains to be seen if today's gamers are still interested in playing with miniature trains, while jostling a fictitious economy.

Train Fever is now available for Linux users

The developers announced the release of their game a while ago and they also said that the Linux and Mac OS X versions would be arriving a week later. They have kept their promise and Linux users can now get it from Steam, just like everyone else.

"Starting today, Train Fever can also be played on Mac OS X and Linux systems. Existing Windows players can install the game on Mac and Linux systems as well. New players always buy the game for all platforms. We are excited that Train Fever is now available for all major platforms. In the next days, we focus on improving the game as announced in the 'Post release plans' update," say the devs from Urban Games.

The developers have implemented a special engine for this particular game and they were able to provide some interesting features for the players, like randomly generated and modifiable terrain, a simulated urban development, procedurally generated buildings, no grid whatsoever, passenger and freight transport, and more than 150 years of transportation history.

"In other words, it's a modern-day Transport Tycoon with procedural content and a sophisticated city simulation. It's the year 1850, and there are great times ahead! Establish a transport company and be its manager. Build infrastructure such as railways and stations, purchase transportation vehicles and manage lines. Fulfill the people's needs and watch cities evolve dynamically," reads the synopsis on Steam.

The system requirements are not very high and it will be possible to play it on middle-end computers: Ubuntu 12.10 or higher, an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB or RAM, Nvidia GeForce 8800 512 MB or ATI Radeon HD 3850 512 MB graphic, and drivers with OpenGL 3.2 support.
