The driver of the train that crashed near Santiago de Compostela was on the phone before derailing, reports say.

The new details emerged once the contents of the train's black box were unsealed. He had responded to a phone call from a co-worker.

The person calling him worked for state train operator Renfe, EuroNews informs. They were discussing a route from Madrid to Ferrol in Galicia just minutes before the deadly accident.

"From the content of the conversation and from the sound in the background it seems that the driver was consulting a map or some similar paper document," court documents clarify.

Driver Francisco Garzon ended up steering the train at twice the speed limit in a dangerous curve, and he was arrested on 79 homicide charges after the crash.
