At this year’s issue of the Sundance Film Festival in January, a very unexpected thing happened when Courtney Love and long-estranged daughter Frances Bean Cobain were reunited on the red carpet. Not only did they agree to appear in the same photo together but they also showed signs that all troubles between them were now a thing of the past.

If you know anything of their history, you know the circumstances in which Frances Bean opted to leave her mother’s house, amid allegations of drug use and emotional abuse.

It later emerged that they had reconciled to bring to the attention of the fans the first authorized documentary on the life and death of Kurt Cobain, frontman of the legendary rock band Nirvana.

It’s called “Cobain: Montage of Heck” and is directed by Brett Morgen, who previously helmed the Robert Evans documentary “The Kid Stays in the Picture,” which was received very warmly by critics and fans alike.

“Montage of Heck” is still making the festival rounds, but it will also premiere on HBO on May 4. In preparation for that, Yahoo! has released the first official trailer (see below), which translates as a 2 and a half minutes’ worth of pure heartbreak for true Nirvana fans.

The film will include never-before-seen private footage and photos, statements from family members, including Love, documents and animated sequences, a narrative technique that Morgen previously used in “The Kid.” As you can see from the pull quotes inserted in the trailer, the documentary already has the critics’ seal of approval.
