“The Avengers” director and William Shakespeare are “a match made in heaven”

You probably wouldn’t think that the guy who made “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “The Avengers” would have any inclination towards William Shakespeare’s work, but know that Joss Whedon has directed a modern version of “Much Ado About Nothing.”

Below, embedded at the end of this post is the first official trailer for it and, indeed, it looks refreshing.

Shot in black and white, the film keeps the original dialog but brings the story to modern times. This is a recipe used before with Shakespeare to amazing results.

Yes, Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo and Juliet” is the first the comes to mind.

“Much Ado About Nothing” premiered at TIFF in 2012 and got only raving reviews, as some of the pull quotes in the trailer indicate.

It will be out in US theaters on June 7.
