The Meskel Square intersection in Ethiopia has no traffic lights in place

Traffic in most American and European big cities is so insanely chaotic, it's actually mesmerizing to watch, but the same can be said about some places in Africa and Asia.

The Meskel Square intersection in the city of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is a perfect example of such a messy street, as there are no traffic signs in place. Motorists who travel through this intersection won't see a single traffic light or traffic controller there.

When traffic laws are enforced and obeyed properly, driving through busy streets is usually a breeze for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. But when the rules are ignored or simply don't exist, even the shortest ride can turn chaotic and disorganized.

That's exactly what happens in Meskel Square, a busy crossroads in Addis Ababa. Although traffic doesn't seem too heavy in the video embedded below, it's quite surprising that such a wide intersection doesn't have just one single sign.

What's extraordinary, though, is that even if they don't have proper regulations, drivers seem to be doing just fine. That's probably because every driver there is aware of the lack of traffic laws and is very cautious. As you can see in the clip, vehicles simply work around each other trying not to crash.

However, Amusing Planet reveals that the square is one of the major hotspots for accidents in Addis Ababa. Between 2004 and 2006, 237 major accidents occurred there, which means 8% of all accidents in the city.

Meskel Square is a well-known square in the city of Addis Ababa, as it is often used for public gatherings, demonstrations and festivals.
