A team of researchers writing in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health say that, according to their investigation, proximity to busy roads can take its toll on an individual's kidneys.

The specialists analyzed how well the kidneys of 1100 volunteers performed when it came to their filtering serum creatinine.

This led them to the conclusion that the kidneys of those who lived within 1 kilometer of a major road were less efficient at performing the aforementioned function, sources say.

In fact, they performed the task at hand as if the individual had been roughly 4 years older than they really were.

Given the fact that reduced renal function is in itself a major contributor to heart disease and stroke risk, the authors of this study urge that further research on this issue be carried out.
