Video game developer Toys for Bob says that, at one point during the development process for Skylanders, the company reached out to Nintendo about a potential partnership, but the company turned down the opportunity.

Paul Reiche, the leader of the studio, says that the representative of the Japanese company looked at an early prototype and then said that they had never seen such a title before and that they were not interested in it.

The executive tells IGN that, “We have no idea why. Clearly, they have got properties well suited to this world. Why it is that they didn’t rush in here will probably haunt them for the rest of their days.”

A partnership between Activision and Nintendo to launch a version of Skylanders with special characters on the Wii U could have boosted sales of the console.

The title could also have offered tougher competition for Disney Infinity, the other major franchise that mixes real-world toys with virtual experiences.

The final Skylanders: Swap Force character, called Doom Stone, will be launched on April 23 and Activision has suggested that on the same date, it will reveal its future plans for the franchise.

Rumors also say that Disney Infinity will announce a new version of the game with Marvel character, including The Avengers, at the end of April.
