Floyd Landis' B Sample result changed a lot inside the world of cycling. Even if most of the experts were expecting the negative verdict, the consequences for Landis' failed drug tests are extremely serious. Not only that the American will undergo a ban, but he will also be stripped of his Tour de France title. More, Landis was sacked by his Phonak team earlier in the weekend.
Even if the International Cycling Union (UCI) are now to decide what Landis' future will be, the Tour de France officials already
decided to give the "yellow jersey" to Oscar Pereiro, the 2nd overall in Tour's final standings. Although it's not official, Christian Prudhomme stated that Pereiro should be announced of his win in a couple of days.
"It goes without saying that for us Floyd Landis is no longer the winner of the 2006 Tour de France. Our determination is even stronger now to fight against doping and to defend this magnificent sport. We can't imagine a different outcome", said Prudhomme.
Still, UCI's lawyer, Philippe Verbiest, argued that Landis will not suffer any international sanctions - including being stripped of his Tour victory - until the US disciplinary commissions make their decision. "Until he is found guilty or admits guilt, he will keep the yellow jersey. This is normal. You are not sanctioned before you are found guilty", stated Prudhomme.
Despite of not having secured his victory, Spaniard Oscar Pereiro is already enjoying his first ever Tour de France "yellow jersey". After finding out his former teammate's B Sample result, Pereiro admitted that he feels like a champ.
"After hearing the result of the B test this morning I feel 99 percent champion. It's a victory for the whole team. There are some bureaucratic steps still to go and we don't know what the lawyers will do, so I must wait some days or weeks before I know for sure. It isn't the best way to win the Tour but if I do get it I will feel proud of what I have achieved, with the support of everyone behind me".
