Simi Valley-based, tape backup systems manufacturer Qualstar presented its Touchless Touch Screen Technology inside Supermicro’s booth at 2012 Embedded Systems Conference (ECS).

The company claims its concept has all the advantages of the traditional touchscreen, without any disadvantages like the presence of a special protective glass that will allow the user to interact with the touch matrix, while protecting the screen behind it.

The concept is rather simple at first sight. It consists of two infrared cameras that are mounted in the upper corners of the display, and that are permanently creating an invisible light curtain.

If an object or finger is introduced through this curtain, the cameras will triangulate their position and will move the screen cursor accordingly.

The technology is much faster than a traditional touchscreen, having a 10 times smaller response time and it costs almost 90% less.
