The development team at The Creative Assembly has recently launched a new Wrath of Sparta expansion for Total War: Rome II and the company is enticing gamers to pick it up by revealing one of the new elite units that players can control, the Athenian trained armored marines.

The official announcement says that “In the aftermath of the Graeco-Persian War at the beginning of the 5th century BC, Athens managed to further consolidate its role as a regional power and usher in the era of the Athenian Empire. A main pillar of their power was their naval supremacy which had played such a vital role for the Greek efforts against the Persian forces in the epic Battle of Salamis.”

The power of the state on the seas was based on the Trires, fast and easy to maneuver galleys who used three rows or oars and allowed the faction to move around enemies and take them by surprise.

Ramming was the best way to send a ship to the bottom of the sea at the time, but boarding also took place and that was the moment when Athenian armored hoplites, who had both good equipment and training, were able to shine.

Naval warfare was one of the main new mechanics added in Total War: Rome II and the new elite unit is designed to allow gamers to enhance their capacities in this area.

Wrath of Sparta allows gamers to go back in time to the moment when four mighty Greek states struggled to control the country, with a map that’s more detailed than anything The Creative Assembly has delivered before.

Total War: Attila is the next title in the long-running strategy series

Wrath of Sparta breathes new life into Rome II, but the focus of The Creative Assembly is squarely on the entirely new Attila experience, which is set to be offered on the PC in the middle of January.

The title will focus on the decline of the Roman Empire and the struggles against the barbarian invaders, including the very powerful Huns.

The studio is introducing a number of new features, like family tress and climate, which were not part of Rome II, and it says that gamers will have to deal with a more visceral world where abandoning a settlement might be the best outcome for a particular turn.

Total War: Attila also introduces new units, better graphics, and a better campaign and Artificial Intelligence.
