Total War: Attila is the next project from The Creative Assembly, based on the campaign of the best military commander of the Dark Ages, and the developers working on the title believe that the game will have something to offer to both long-term fans of the franchise and to those who play it for the first time.

Veterans who have played Rome II and the other mixes of turn-based and real-time strategy will be able to test their skills by choosing to play as the Western Roman Empire, which at this point is no longer at the peak of its power and needs to give up territory in order to try and survive.

Others can choose to play as Attila and his Huns, who are very powerful because they use a form of warfare that includes mounted archers and shock cavalry that other factions have problems dealing with.

Al Bickham, a communications manager at The Creative Assembly, tells Eurogamer that “Playing as the Western Roman Empire is going to be a very challenging game. We're designing this experience for the real Total War veterans. You've almost got to figure out what you can afford to lose.”

A new razing mechanics is designed to allow factions to get some value out of the regions they are abandoning, and it fits with the general apocalyptic tone of the experience.

Dark Ages and the fight for survival

Total War: Attila aims to show gamers how the people of the moment interpreted the coming assault of the Huns and the way their view on reality determined their actions.

Simon Mann, the senior battle designer, adds, “Rome is beset on all sides, even from the inside. Historically, you've got this idea of the Seven Seals being opened, you've got the four horsemen personified by Attila and his hunt. These were things that people were writing about at the time.”

Total War: Attila will use the same core mechanics as Rome II, but the team is introducing the much requested family tree and religion features in order to satisfy the needs of the fan community.

At the same time, the studio is improving the engine in order to increase the visual quality of the title, and there’s a new focus on the power that fire has to destroy buildings and terrify armies.

Total War: Attila will be offered on the PC and is set to launch in 2015.
