Video game developer The Creative Assembly and publisher SEGA are announcing that the new title in the Total War series is called Attila and will focus on the powerful character who invaded Europe and seemed at one point ready to conquer the entire continent.

The two companies state, "Desperate barbaric tribes rally against the ailing might of a dying and divided Roman empire; the light of civilization gutters and dims. In the great steppes of Scythia, a vast and terrifying force gathers, led by a warrior king whose thirst for conquest is utterly unequaled."

Attilla the Hun was known as the Scourge of God and was a brilliant strategic mastermind, as well as a very good tactician, able to use his mounted troops to devastating effect, but also to adapt at psychological warfare.

Janos Gaspar, project lead on Total War: Attila, states that the company is listening to feedback coming from fans and is introducing family and skill trees, which have long been requested.

He adds, "But to really bring the period to life, we’re building on these foundations with many new strategic features for them to consider, such as advanced street-fighting, civilians, complete settlement destruction and dynamic fire that can rage across a city as armies clash. We want to push players to the limits of their skill to survive against the odds, and to love every minute of it."

A focus on destruction

Total War: Attila will be focused on a period when the Roman Empire is in decline, unable to eliminate the corruption that's destroying it from within and incapable of finding enemies that it can easily subdue in order to rekindle its fighting spirit.

The Creative Assembly says that the new title will introduce a range of destruction mechanics, with a focus on the ability of fire to destroy buildings and to terrify men, with a new raze mechanics able to eliminate cities and regions from the campaign map.

The studio says that the title will include period accurate technology, weapons and armaments, religious choices, cultures and interesting social trends.

The engine powering the Total War series has been enhanced for both the campaign and the tactical battles in order to accurately deliver the sense of apocalypse that followed the invasion of Atiila the Hun.

The title will also introduce overhauled mechanics for politics, civic management and technological progression.

Total War: Attila is due for release in 2015 on the PC.
