The SD-H903A from Toshiba is the first HD DVD Desktop Writer designed for desktop integration. The Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD) will showcase SD-H903A and the addition of
high-definition video editing capabilities to desktop systems at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas with sample shipments expected to debut this month.
"Ideally designed for single-bay desktop PCs with its multi-functional capabilities, Toshibas SD-H903A is the perfect solution for professional high-definition content creation. In addition, consumers can capture content, edit home videos and create vast digital content repositories for movies, music and photos. With dual layer discs, HD DVD provides 30GB of storage capacity which can accommodate up to four hours of HD DVD movie content with extended cuts and interactive features, up to five full-length standard DVD films, up to 7,500 MP3 songs or up to 30,000 high-quality images," informed Toshiba.
The SD-H903A has been designed as a half-height HD DVD writer delivering functionality equivalent to a multi-drive and support for high-definition DVD content but also for legacy formats such as CD and DVD materials. One of the shortcomings of the Toshiba HD DVD Writer is the fact that it does not support rewritable media, but Toshiba's Paul Castellaneta, senior director, HD DVD business development, revealed that future models will feature rewritable capabilities.
The SD-H903A Desktop HD DVD Writer will be connected to the system via a Serial ATA interface and will come with Windows Vista compliance. "One of the beautiful things about HD DVD is our ability to keep it low cost, at a high reliability," explained Castellaneta. "The goal will continue to be to offer the lowest HD solution in the market."
Although Toshiba has not made public the pricing details for the SD-H903A, according to Castellaneta, the price will be half of that of a Blu-ray solution, meaning approximately $500.
