At CES 2014 in Las Vegas, Toshiba had a couple interesting of interesting products put on display, including what the company called the world’s first 4K laptops, the Tecra W50 and Satellite P50t.

Actually, the Tecra W50 is being marketed as a mobile workstation that of course arrives with an Ultra HD 4K display.

This advanced laptop is targeted mostly at professionals working in fields like design and engineering who rely on demanding software to complete their workload.

On the other hand, Toshiba says that not only creative professions could take advantage of the Tecra W50, but also health workers, as well like those working as radiologists or in diagnostic imagery.

In order to answer these needs, the Toshiba Tecra W50 arrives with a 15.6-inch diagonal Ultra HD 4K IGZO display that offers a native resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels and 282ppi.

Vice President of Marketing at Toshiba, Carl Pinto says the company “has applied years of experience and engineering resources developing Ultra HD 4K TVs to help engineers and 3D designers bring their creations to life like never before and enable better.”

Those working with SolidWorks or AutoCAD should have no problem in doing so on the Tecra W50. The mobile workstation draws power from a 4th gen Intel Core i7 quad-core processor combined with high-speed memory slots that can be configured up to 32GB.

On top of that, the graphics department is home to 2GB of GDDR5 dedicated NVIDIA Quadro K2100M graphics memory.

The Tecra has a spill-resistant, LED-backlit keyboard with 10-key numeric pad, built-in AccuPoint pointing device and a clickpad.

With such a capable configuration, don’t expect the laptop to be the lightest device, as the Tecra weights a little under 6 lbs / 2.72 kg, which isn't bad but certainly not Ultrabook material.

In the connectivity department, the laptop arrives with dual USB 3.0, one USB 2.0 port, media card reader, eSATA/USB combo, Express Card slot, HDMI and VGA ports. Toshiba also offers Gigabit LAN and optional Mini Serial port for even more functionality.

Last but not least, the new laptop can be connected to a desktop by virtue of a docking connector connected to Toshiba’s Hi-Speed Port Replicator III.

As you might expect, the Tecra W50 will not come cheap. The mobile workstation with 4K display has already been made available for purchase and customers will be able to grab theirs for $2,249 / €1,647.
