Toshiba has recently unveiled a few more details on the launch of its smartphone that includes the Snapdragon platform, the TG01. According to the company, its handset will become available on the European market in the summer of 2009. The new TG01 comes with an enormous 4.1” Wide-VGA touch-screen display able to deliver an 800x480 pixel resolution, as well as with image tuning technology similar to that used in Toshiba’s LCD TV products.

“I am thrilled to announce the launch of TG01 in Europe, the market that we position at the center of our Digital products strategy,” said Hisatsugu Nonaka, corporate senior executive vice president of Toshiba Corporation. “The TG01 is the future, a truly mobile device that satisfies consumer demands for total mobile connectivity, something most of today’s handsets fail to do.”

“Our challenge was to provide an innovative product that goes beyond today’s needs to anticipate tomorrow’s capabilities. In creating the TG01, we’ve integrated the very best of our mobile and LCD technologies in an attractive, premium quality multimedia handset with internet access capabilities. TG01 represents Toshiba’s commitment to excellence in an exciting new category, and we look forward to launching it in the global market,” he also added.

The new Toshiba TG01 smartphone will be the first device to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset. The platform includes a custom processor specifically developed to deliver both 1GHz computing power and high-energy efficiency. The Snapdragon platform is able to deliver high processing performance, built-in GPS, high-speed 3G connectivity and multimedia capabilities into a single chip solution, transforming the handset into a groundbreaking, super slim and yet powerful solution.

“Toshiba’s TG01 device leverages Snapdragon’s unprecedented capabilities to deliver a truly innovative user experience with nearly twice the processing power, more advanced multimedia, and thinnest form factor compared to today’s smartphones.” said Steve Mollenkopf, executive vice president of Qualcomm. “We are pleased to be working with Toshiba to deliver Snapdragon in the TG01 to the industry, demonstrating how evolutions in wireless technology are redefining what it means to be mobile.”

Users are offered a solution that delivers easy-to-use navigation between different applications through the TG01's touchscreen and the three dimensional user interface. Moreover, the phone doesn't need to be touched to perform every-day operations, as it includes innovative gesture operations. For example, users are able to activate an incoming call by simply shaking the device. Moreover, a tilt sensor enables users to switch between applications by tilting the device to the left or to the right.

“The TG01 is quite simply the next step in cutting edge mobile technology that will enable us to deliver mobile content at unprecedented levels of speed and quality, and will help to firmly establish Toshiba in EMEA as a leading partner for Network Operators that want to deliver value-added services and convergence.” said Hidehito Koka, general manager, Toshiba Mobile Communications Division, Europe.
