The IFA 2014 tradeshow has started in full force in Berlin, and as expected, we are seeing a lot of new products being rolled out into the wild.

Just a while ago, we told you Toshiba brought out a super-cheap affordable Windows 8.1 tablet which goes by the name of the Encore Mini.

But that’s not all the company has planned for us today. The device maker is taking the opportunity to out its next-gen Chromebook, which is an updated model of the device Toshiba launched not so long ago.

Compared to the previous model, Toshiba has refined things in the design department, squeezing in a 13-inch display in a 12-inch chassis.

The second-gen Toshiba Chromebook will be offered in two versions: a base model arriving with the standard HD res display and a premium model coming with a full HD (1920 x 1080 pixel res) with IPS technology.

There aren’t many Chromebooks offering this standard out there, with the Samsung Chromebook 2 being one of them, and now Toshiba is tempting perspective buyers with an alternative.

The new Chrome OS laptop maintains the 13.3-inch frame factor and draws life from an Intel Celeron N2840 dual-core processor clocked at 2.16GHz. In the vein of almost every Chromebook present on the market, the lappy will be offered with 16GB of internal storage via SSD.

Luckily, Google throws in the usual 100GB of free Google Drive storage for the next two years after you have purchased the notebook.

The premium version will be outfitted with 4GB of RAM, while the base version will only take advantage of 2GB of RAM.

Powering things onboard of the next-gen Chrome lappy is a three-cell battery, and Toshiba says the base version should last users up to 11 hours of run time, while the most advanced version will give you only 9 hours.

Last but not least, have a look at the device’s port galore which consists of HDMI, one USB 3.0, one USB 2.0, a headphone/mic jack combo and security lock slot. As for connectivity, customers will be able to take advantage of 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.

The laptop comes with a pleasingly-looking silver finish and the producing company says the Chromebook will be made available in the US starting October 5. Expect the two models to appear in retail with price tags ranging between $250 / €190 and $330 / €251.

It looks like the Samsung Chromebook 2 is in for some serious competition from Toshiba.
