Toshiba Rolls Out New 2.5-Inch 640GB Hard Drives

Coming to provide its customers with an increased storage solution in a small and energy-efficient form factor, Toshiba has recently announced the introduction of its new line of 2.5-inch hard drives, boasting a capacity of 640GB. With the announcement, the company's Storage Device Division (SDD) has expanded its lineup with two new models, the Mkxx65GSX, designed for both desktop and notebook PCs, but also a new portable hard drive for users looking for increased storage space on an external storage solution.

“From cherished family photos and home videos to entertainment collections and personal data files, consumers are creating huge libraries of digital content on their home computers,” Manuel Camarena, product manager for consumer storage at the Toshiba Storage Device Division, said. “But, most people are not taking steps to ensure this valuable content is protected against computer failure. Without a backup solution, consumers have the potential for that crushing moment when they realize all of their memories, entertainment and personal data files are gone. An easy-to-use, high-capacity product such as the Toshiba Portable Hard Drive acts like an insurance policy against the loss of cherished and valuable digital memories.”

The internal 2.5-inch Mkxx65GSX hard drive is available in a range of capacities, including the 160GB, 250GB, 320GB and 500GB models. The drive is designed to provide users with a speed of 5400RPM, coupled with an 8MB buffer memory, an SATA 3.0Gb/s interface and an average seek time of 12ms. Thanks to its compact design, the drive can be employed by both desktop and notebook computer users, providing them with an increased storage solution.

As far the company's line of portable hard drives goes, users will be able to choose from three capacities, including those of 320GB, 500GB and 640GB, all of which have been featured with a USB 2.0 interface for an easy connection to the their computer system. The drive weights in at approximately 171g and is available in four colors, including Vivid White, Liquid Blue, Komodo Green and Rocket Red.

The new Toshiba portable hard drive is priced at US$179.99 and is available through the company's website, while the internal drive is scheduled to ship to PC makers and distributors in the fourth quarter of this year.
