Powered by the Intel Atom N455 CPU

Even though they are supposed to be entry-level mobile PCs with very low capabilities, compared with all other laptops and, of course, desktops, netbooks seem to be growing in performance by the month. In fact, as the performance standard for computers, in general, rises, even that which is considered entry-level must evolve. This is why Intel will soon launch a number of new CPUs meant to raise the bar a step higher.

The Intel Atom N4x5 CPUs will support DDR3 memory, something that OEMs have been waiting for for quite some time. In fact, some PC makers, like Toshiba, are so eager that they are already well on the way towards bringing out a netbook based on the Atom processors, in this case the N455.

As revealed by a recent report, Toshiba will soon unleash the mobile personal computer known as NB305-10F. As a modified NB305, this system will boast a 10.1-inch, WLED-backlit display, with a maximum resolution of 1,024 x 600 pixels, a 250GB hard disk drive (HDD) and the Intel GMA 3150 integrated graphics. The Atom N455 isn't really any faster than the Atom N450 (1.66Ghz), but it let Toshiba implement not DDR2 but 1GB DDR3-1066 memory.

The connectivity and I/O options aren't all that different from what most other netbooks come with. In addition to 10/100 LAN, 802.11b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth, the netbook features a 0.3-megapixel webcam, a multi-gesture touchpad and a Lithium-Ion battery that will keep the device alive for up to 11 hours.

Higher speeds, multiple cores and support for better memory are some of the elements that OEMs hope will prompt those that already own netbooks to upgrade, eventually leading the netbook market into another period of rapid growth. Unfortunately, it is unclear when this laptop, priced at 350 Euro, will finally make its first steps out into the world.
