Ultrabook hardware in a case that reminds us of the Asus Eee Pad Slider

For the upcoming launch of Windows 8, many notebook makers have turned their attention towards hybrid tablet/notebook designs including Toshiba who has recently showcased the Portege M930, a 13.3-inch laptop prototype that can be transformed into a slate.

The concept was on display at CES 2012 and is awfully reminiscent of the Asus Eee Pad Slider, although it comes in a brightly colored red case and sports a larger 13.3-inch display.

According to Notebook Italia, this has a resolution of 1280x800 pixels, but its most important feature is the presence of a digitizer that adds stylus support to the mix.

As far as the hardware specifications of the Portege M930 are concerned, Toshiba was pretty quiet in this regard, but it did specify that a Core i5 ultra-low voltage CPU stands at the heart of this prototype.

The 17W processors is a nice fit for a notebook like the Portege M930, and is also used by Toshiba to drive the 13.3-inch display of its creation.

In order for the rest of the system to keep up with the fast Intel CPU, Toshiba has configured the Portege M930 prototype with 4GB of DDR3 memory as well as a 256GB solid state drive.

802.11 b/g/n WiFi and Ethernet are also present, while taking a look around the edges of the convertible notebook reveals that it also packs dual USB 2.0 sockets, HDMI, an SD reader and separate headphone and mic ports.

All these are packed inside a 4.2 pounds (1.9Kg) case, which is a bit on the heavy side if you ask us, but on the other hand it sure helps with making the hinge mechanism more rugged.

Toshiba hasn’t said anything about pricing or availability of the Portege M930 convertible tablet, so it wouldn’t come as a huge shock to us if this prototype will never make it into production.
