It's twice as fast as the best SATA high-end solid-state drives

Enterprise customers tend to have more money to spend that even the richest consumers, which is the main reason why makers of hardware have such success selling things like the Toshiba PX02SS eSSD series, besides their very high performance level.

The new line of solid-state drives relies on the 12 Gbps SAS interface, which means that their potential throughput is twice that of SATA units.

And indeed, the Toshiba PX02SS actually does run at 1.1 GB/s. For comparison, the best SandForce high-end consumer drives manage 500-550 MB/s at their best.

Fast read speeds aren't the only asset here though. The new eSSDs also possess self-encrypting technology, as well as up to 30 full drive writes per day.

This makes them more durable than most solid-state drives, and cuts down the rate at which endurance is lost over time (since the limited write cycles keep being cleared via TRIM or similar technologies).

Furthermore, a layered error correction code (ECC) approach is implemented on all new eSSDs.

Speaking of which, there are four of them, in capacities of 100 GB, 200 GB, 400 GB and 800 GB, all built with 24nm chips.

The only disadvantage, so to speak, is that the writing speed is of only 410 MB/s. High-end consumer SATA SandForce units usually manage 500+ MB/s.

On that note, random 4K performance is of 130,000 IOPS when reading and 42,000 IOPS when writing.

Finally, all new SSDs come in the 2.5-inch form factor (7 mm thick for the 100/200GB ones, 15mm for the other two). Prices weren't mentioned, sadly, but that was expected, since they'll vary according to order size and bartering skills.

“Toshiba’s unique integrated SSD design and manufacturing capability ensures that key components of the SSD, including NAND flash, are designed by Toshiba,” said Don Jeanette, senior director of product marketing at Toshiba Storage Products business unit.

“Component and design commonality reduces qualification time for our customers and reflects Toshiba’s partner-driven approach to SSD design and manufacturing, helping our customers save time and money.”
