For notebook owners, Toshiba is already offering an optical unit, which can also read HD-DVD discs, aside from CDs and DVDs.
Toshiba TS-L802A is the result of the collaboration between Toshiba and Samsung; the optical unit weighs only 160 grams.
Toshiba TS-L802A has a speed of 1X for HD DVD-ROM discs, 8X for reading DVDs, which can be burned at maximum 4X. The
CDs are read at 24X, and users can burn them at maximum 24X.
The device supports the DVD-RAM standard and is fitted with 8MB of cache. Toshiba plans to introduce this unit for mass production starting in early 2006, but the price hasn't been announced yet.
Toshiba was scheduled to launch the HD-DVD discs and players at the end of the year, but according to the latest information, it seems that this will happen in 2006.
