Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD) launched what it seems to be the world's highest-capacity 2.5" hard disk drive - the MK2035GSS HDD - during Computex, a dedicated event which is taking place in Taipei (6-10 June), informs X-bit Labs.
Toshiba's officials said that the new dual-platter MK2035GSS, with a storage capacity of 200GB, is the company's first PMR drive to incorporate tunnel magneto-resistive recording (TMR) head technology.
Furthermore, Toshiba officials added that the mass production of the hard drive will start in August, and it will be based on a special perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology, which, from the point of view of the manufacturer, is meant 'to annihilate' any other similar product.
Toshiba's latest 2.5" HDD features 4200rpm motors, 8MB cache, a special Serial ATA (SATA) II interface, and it weighs only 98 grams.
"Our technology innovation in PMR has laid the foundation for delivering the industry's highest capacity and areal density in the standard mobile drive form factor. It's a win-win combination for mobile PC manufacturers who want to differentiate their offerings with features that attract high-end consumers," said Scott Maccabe, vice president and general manager, Toshiba SDD.
But this is not the only innovative product recently released by the manufacturer, as, just last month, Toshiba Corporation launched a new miniSD memory card with a storage capacity of 2 GB, part of the extensive range of large capacity miniSD memory cards. This new miniSD card, which measures only 20.0mm(W)×21.5mm(L)×1.4mm(T), and weighs 1gr, adds 1GB of storage capacity to Toshiba's dedicated series.
It seems that, even if Toshiba's latest miniSD card is much smaller than a standard SD memory card, it was developed to offer larger storage capacity. More than that, as its main function is to serve all mobile devices, it comes with a special adaptor in order to fit into standard SD slots.
