Toshiba has just announced the introduction of the company’s first 14-inch Ultrabook computer, dubbed the Satellite U840, which comes as the successor of the popular Portege Z830 released in the second part of last year.

Design wise, the new Satellite U840 takes a lot of its cues from its predecessor, but at the end of the day it doesn’t manage to be as svelte as the Z830, since it measures 2cm in width and tips the scales at 1.75kg (about 3.85 pounds).

Moving to the insides of the Ultrabook, users will be greeted by Intel’s mid-range Core i5 ULV processors that can be paired with as much as 8GB of system memory, reports ABT.

For storage purposes, clients have the option of choosing between a 128GB solid state drive and a hybrid solution that pairs a traditional HDD with a 16GB SSD.

By monitoring which files the U840 loads most often, the drive automatically copies the most frequently accessed data into this tiny SSD in order to speed up the system.

As far as connectivity is concerned, the Satellite U840 features all the usual 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and Ethernet options, but also includes an USB 3.0 port and support for Intel's WiDi wireless video streaming technology.

An HDMI output is also included and the rest of the specs sheet includes SRS Premium Sound 3D technology, a webcam and a battery pack that can provide up to eight hours of operation without requiring a recharge.

The 14-inch LED backlit screen included in the Satellite U840 has a native resolution of 1366x768 pixels.

The Toshiba Satellite U840 will be available right from the company’s website, as well as from all major authorized reseller outlets later in Q1 of this year.

Pricing for Toshiba's ultrathin will start at $1,500 (about 1,142 EUR), but as always it will vary depending on the configuration that one goes for.
