It's basically a mobile PC that, like tablets, has the core hardware behind the screen

We've seen plenty of convertible laptops over the years, and the same can be said about tablets, especially since all of them seem to have docks these days, so Toshiba's latest revelation isn't such a surprise.

The product is unique, however, in the sense that it is the first of a new type of product line, as Toshiba describes it: detachable Ultrabook.

“Ultrabook” is a term essentially invented by Intel and defines mobile PCs of 11.6-inch to 13.3 inches (and sometimes above) which have very, very thin form factors.

Nonetheless, they are, in the end, just another type of notebook, imitating the good old clamshell design.

Toshiba's new idea is for ultrabooks that have all the core hardware in the upper half, behind the LCD screen.

The Portege Z10t, as the device is called, also possesses, and this is the most important part, a mechanism that lets it detach from the keyboard.

The product measures 11.6 inches in diagonal, making it resemble a tablet even more.

In fact, even though Toshiba advertises the item as a detachable Ultrabook, it expects it to face off against Android tablets, like Samsung's Galaxy Note 10.1.

We also spot some similarities to Acer's Iconia W-series convertible tablet/notebooks.

Spec-wise, the Full-HD Touch-Display (High Brightness) is driven by the integrated graphics chip inside an Intel Core-Series CPU.

An SSD is used for storage, and the connectivity and I/O capabilities are, likewise, fully covered: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, Intel Wireless Display (optional), USB 3.0, HDMI, micro-HDMI, USB 2.0, VGA, Gigabit LAN, an SD card slot, headphone jack and optional Integrated High-Speed-UMTS/LTE.

Other specs include Trusted Platform Module (TPM v1.2), Intel Active Management Technology (depending on model), Intel Anti-Theft, Toshiba Eco Utility Software and a backlit keyboard.

So far, the device has been released in Germany, but we suspect availability everywhere else is going to be announced shortly.
