14 DAY TRIAL // Corsair has upgraded its GS power supplies and, now, we get to write about another company improving on an already existing product line. Toshiba has officially announced that the Canvio 3.0 and Canvio Basic 3.0 portable hard disk drive units have increased in capacity.
Instead of max 1 TB of storage space, they now provide 1.5 TB, so that owners of PCs and Mac systems may back up more of their files.
Of course, if people decide to store their movies, music and/or photo files instead of using the Canvio for safety purposes, that works too.
"We understand that consumers have choices when it comes to computing and as a result, have varying storage needs," said Maciek Brzeski, vice president of product marketing and development of branded storage products, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Digital Products Division.
"With our newest Canvio 3.0 portable hard drives, consumers can easily swap data between Mac and PC devices, eliminating the hassle of reformatting to work the way they want."
The 1.5 TB Canvio 3.0 has a second perk now, a NTFS driver for Apple Mac operating systems.
Normally, in order to read files from a storage unit formatted this way, with PC compatibility, one would have to get a special reader app. Otherwise, only wiping the drive clean and reformatting it would let a Mac interface with it.
The new NTFS driver makes the format readable by Mac though, which means that no more hassle is involved in trying to move data between it and a Windows-loaded personal computer.
Shipments of the 1.5 TB Canvio 3.0 and Canvio Basics 3.0 will start in early June (next month), for the prices of $200 and $180, respectively. In Europe, we're pretty sure the tags will be $200 Euro and 180 Euro, regardless of what exchange rates say (157 / 141 Euro). For those with less money to spend, lower-capacity (1 TB, 750 GB and 500GB) drives will sell too, for as little as $120 / $110.
