Toshiba, Microsoft partner up for next-gen premium laptops

At Computex 2015, some device manufacturers have taken the opportunity to announce Windows 10 devices, even before Microsoft has had the chance to officially unveil the new operating system.

Toshiba was one of them, and during the event, it unveiled the Astrea convertible laptop, which takes advantage of a 360 degree hinge that lets you fold the screen all the way back and use the device in tablet mode.

Even if the laptop has been announced, the Astrea won’t make it out on the market until late 2015. As we said before, the notebook packs Windows 10 out of the box, which is not out yet. On top of that, it takes advantage of Intel’s sixth generation Intel Core “Skylake” processor clocked at 2.3GHz.

Furthermore, we can tell you that the new laptop convertible will arrive with a 13.3-inch display with amazing 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160 pixels), plus up to 8GB of internal storage.

Other specifications include an Intel RealSense 3D camera, a SD card slot, HDMI port, two full sized USB ports, and USB Type-C connector.

Slowly but surely, the industry standard is shifting towards USB Type-C. ASUS, for example, also announced its brand new Transformer Book 10 with Windows 10 and a USB Type-C port.

Until now, Apple’s new Macbook with Retina display and Google’s Chromebook Pixel were the only products to offer USB Type-C functionality, but as we advance into 2015, more and more products taking advantage of this new standard get unveiled.

Microsoft and Toshiba have been quite skittish when it comes to sharing details about the Astrea convertible, or even showing off some images with the device, but the folks at Mobile Geeks have spotted an unnamed convertible put on display on the grounds at Computex 2015. So we have to assume this is a prototype of the Astrea (although we can see the Satellite moniker plastered on it).

In related news, Dell also partnered up with Microsoft to produce another gorgeous laptop called the XPS 15, which stands out due to its gorgeous bezeless Infinity Display. It’s very possible that this laptop will also bundle an Intel Skylake processor, but at the moment, this is just speculation.
