Launched back in June 2010, the Android-powered Toshiba AC100 smartbook is about to receive the Froyo treatment along with Flash support.

The device seems to be Toshiba's attempt to take on the Asus Eee PCs and netbooks.

However, instead of opting for a standard operating system that is usually embedded onto desktop PCs, Toshiba's smartbook runs on the Android 2.1 Eclair mobile platform.

It might seem a bit late, but according to Steve Paine, a user who bought one of the sleek toys, the update build 5.0029 appeared today and is available for download.

In addition to the new Froyo operating system, the 200 MB update also promises Flash Player 10.1 support.

Toshiba AC100 is one of the first devices to ship with NVIDIA's Tegra 2 chipset built around a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore processor.

Apparently, the update release was held back by the fact that the device does not feature a touchscreen, instead having a 10.1-inch display.

AC100 owners are likely dreaming of getting Android 3.0 in the future, but the manufacturer hasn't disclosed any plans for porting Honeycomb to its smartbook.

The smartbook is capable to deliver about 8 hours of browsing and video playback or 7 days standby before asking for a recharge.

Besides its 10.1-inch, 1,024 x 600 pixel resolution display, Toshiba AC100 packs a 32GB SSD, 512MB of DDR2 memory, as well as a 1.3 megapixel camera.

In terms of connectivity, the device has average features such as Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR support, an HDMI port, as well as 3G data, which is optional.

When it comes to software, the AC100 is a pleasant surprise, as it ships with Documents to Go for documents editing, Exchange support, Opera Mobile browser and a proprietary media player with support for HD 1080p video playback.
