After suing and shutting down countless filesharing sites and systems,
the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) is now on the other side.

The organization that fights for the Hollywood studios' rights has been sued by Torrentspy for conspiracy, unlawful business practices, misappropriation of trade secrets, violations of the California Invasion of Privacy Act, and more.

Torrentspy is accusing MPAA of hiring a hacker for $15,000 to obtain confidential information from the servers run by Valence Media, the company behind Torrentspy.

It seems that the hacker's goal was achieved as he obtained a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet containing Torrentspy.com income and expenses from January through June 2005, private emails of Torrentspy.com/Valence Media principals and employees, confidential information on the company's infrastructure and financial situation.

ArsTechnica writes that Torrentspy found out about this from the hacker himself, a former associate of one of Valence Media's officials, who had a change of heart and came clean.

MPAA denied the accusations and said that the claims are false.

"Torrentspy is trying to obscure the facts, to hide the fact that they are facilitating thievery. We are confident that our lawsuit against them will be successful because the law is on our side," said Kori Bernards, MPAA's vice president of corporate communications.

In March, the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) sued the www.torrentspy.com search engine portal for copyright infringement.

Torrentspy is used by those who want to find links to movies and music; the next step is to download them with the world's most popular file sharing service, BitTorrent, which, according to CacheLogic, is responsible for 35% of the Internet traffic.
