Tori Spelling had better stick to the day job (reality television) because her big comeback to the small screen with scripted programming isn’t really panning out. Her ABC Family sitcom “Mystery Girls” has been axed after a very disappointing first season.

This isn’t official just yet, but TV Line reports that a decision has already been made with network bosses and there’s really no chance for them to go back on it: the series failed to perform well in the ratings and a second season won’t be ordered.

This wasn’t just Spelling’s much touted comeback to television, but also her first job with actress Jennie Garth since they worked together on the Aaron Spelling teen drama “Beverly Hills 90210.” Much weight was placed on this in the promo tour for “Mystery Girls,” but it seems that this wasn’t enough to get viewers interested in it.

“The campy series ended its run much the same way it started it — with disappointing ratings. The Aug. 27 finale drew slightly more than 500K viewers and a .024 demo rating,” Deadline says.

The sitcom had the two girls playing former celebrities who turn to crime solving as a means to earn a livelihood. From what I’ve seen in trailers and teasers, there really wasn’t anything to redeem the show, other than the fact that it brought Tori and Jennie together again, which, for showbiz executives and fans, means close to nothing.

So now that Tori’s latest project has been canceled, it’s probably wise to prepare for a new scandal like the one at the beginning of the year (when husband Dean McDermott was caught cheating on her), which secured her a new reality show, to help her pay the bills.
