Twitter is continuing its 2010 Year in Review, after first revealing some of the biggest new names to join the site, with a list of top trends for the closing year. The biggest trends of 2010 are rather predictable, a mixture of global events, new technologies and popular entertainment, but the more interesting data is in the separate category charts.

"From earthquakes and politics to popstars and hashtags, Twitter Trends are a window into what the world is talking about. In this edition of #Hindsight2010, we offer our list of the biggest Trends of the year," Twitter announced.

"An astounding 25 billion Tweets were sent in 2010. We analyzed all those Tweets to identify the year’s Top 10 Trends, as well as the leading Trends in eight categories: News Events, People, Movies, Television, Technology, World Cup, Sports and Hashtags," it added.

"Each Trend in the Top 10 list includes multiple related terms, to give the most accurate view of the topics that people cared about most in 2010," Twitter explained.

The biggest trend of the year was the Gulf Oil Spill which monopolized attention for several months. The fact that this particular topic came on top shows that Twitter, while enjoying a solid global audience - indicated by the second biggest topic the FIFA World Cup, still has a large US audience.

The World Cup also contributed to the popularity of the fifth biggest trend on the site, the dreaded Vuvuzela. The horrible tool that both amused and annoyed came to define the 2010 World Cup and its presence in the Twitter top Trending topics shows that it made an impact, for better or for worse, on a global level.

You can check out the main Top 10 Twitter Trends of the year below and you can head over to Twitter's dedicated site to see what were the biggest topics in eight different categories: news events, people, movies, TV, technology, Word Cup, sports and hashtags.
