Many important apps are still missing from the Windows Store, despite Microsoft's efforts to convince more developers to port their software to its modern operating system, but those who are already there get thousands of downloads thanks to the growing market share of this new platform.

There's no doubt that apps available for free experience the biggest success, not only on Windows, but on all the other platforms, and the same is happening on Microsoft's operating systems too.

As everyone can see by simply launching the Windows Store and looking at the top free software category, Microsoft does not dominate the charts as it used to do a few months ago, as third-parties have already attracted more downloads and are now offering very good options to perform certain tasks.

Facebook still number one

The number one app in the Windows Store right now is Facebook, which was launched together with Windows 8.1 and still works flawlessly on Windows 10. Keep in mind that Facebook does not work on Windows 8, so in case you run this OS version right now, you need to update to Windows 8.1

While Facebook has more than 41,000 ratings right now, Netflix appears to be a lot more successful, as no less than 172,000 Windows 8 and 8.1 users downloaded the app and submitted their reviews.

The third app in the chart is Microsoft's Skype, which received no less than 401,222 ratings at the time of writing this article, followed by The Weather Channel with about 11,000 votes, but good enough to receive an overall 4-star rating.

Adobe Photoshop Express, Viber, and YouTube are also in the top free apps in the Windows Store, but their number of downloads and votes are far behind the ones mentioned above.

Growing consumer appeal for Metro apps

Metro apps weren't really successful at first and it's really hard to say whether they are so right now, but Windows 10 is definitely boosting their consumer appeal for PC users.

On Windows 10, Metro apps are launched in their very own windows right on the desktop, and mouse users can easily resize them and control all options just like they do with traditional Windows software.

Moreover, Microsoft removed the old Charms bar and integrated it into each app for easier access, but the company has already confirmed that this particular tweak is subject to more changes in future updates.

The Modern UI is also expected to receive more updates in the coming months as part of the Windows 10 rollout, but it remains to be seen if Metro apps can really become helpful on the desktop.
