The Steam best-selling list on the Linux platform is dominated by Rust

The Steam for Linux platform now features so many games that the best-selling list changes on a weekly basis and new titles are being added all the time. Some of the Linux developers really hit pay dirt with their version for the open source platform, so we'll take a look at the first five games on the list.

Football Manager 2014 takes the fifth place in the best-selling list on Steam for Linux. This game needs no introduction and it's the best of its kind, no contest. What is interesting and noteworthy about this new entry is that Football Manager 2014 can be purchased right now only at a full price. This means that it got there with on its own power, without the help of a discount.

The fourth place is occupied by Planet Explorers. This is a sandbox adventure RPG game that uses a powerful Voxel-based engine that allows players to change the terrain in any way they like. Moreover, Planet Explorers is still in the Early Access Game program, which means that is not actually ready. Even in this Beta stage, the game managed to sell enough.

Garry's Mod, a physics sandbox based upon the Source engine used in Half-Life 2, which allows users to do almost anything if they put their mind to it, is in third place. Now, keep in mind that this is not a game per se. It allows users to go crazy with the environment and the character and sets no boundaries for the players.

And to think that the developer of Garry's Mod, coincidently called Gary, didn't want a Linux version at first and dismissed the idea. The Linux community won him over and now Garry's Mod is one of the best-sold games on Steam for Linux.

Europa Universalis IV takes the second place. This is a historical simulation developed and published by Paradox Interactive, the same one also making the Crusader Kings titles. To be fair, the game did have a generous 66% discount for a few days (you can still get it at that price cut for the next two hours), but this is a very complex and interesting title that deserves all the attention.

The first place is occupied by Rust, an FPS sandbox game developed and published on Steam for Linux by Facepunch Studios. The game has been hovering in the top five for some time now and it's not a surprise that it has claimed the first place. This is a game that put no limits on the players and everything goes smooth.
