The discovery of the Lesula (Cercopithecus lomamiensis), the first new monkey species uncovered in the last 28 years, was confirmed in 2012, oddee.com informs.

The Lesula was found in the Lomami Basin of Congo, and was well known by local hunters in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A new species of spider was discovered in August, in Grants Pass, Oregon. The Cave Robber (Trogloraptor marchingtoni) sports front claws, and is about half the size of a dollar bill, CTV News reports.

The spider was named after Grants Pass deputy sheriff Dave Marchington, who led scientists to its discovery.

2011 brought us the Yoda bat, a variety of tube-nosed fruit bat found in Papua New Guinea. The Yoda bat was discovered in a remote rainforest, during a two-month expedition in the Nakanai and Muller mountain ranges.
