Entertainment Weekly has just published its list of Top 25 Entertainers of the Year. Before you close the browser window and shake your head, thinking it's just one of those end-of-the-year round-ups that sticks labels on people and calls them either "good" or "bad", take a few minutes and browse through it. You will not find Paris or Britney on this list, not to mention the fact that the people at EW actually took their time to look into what a particular celebrity has actually done - and we have used their choices as a point of departure for making our own compilation of "real celebrities and their achievements in 2007". So sit back and enjoy a brief stroll into Hollywood's world of truly shining stars. No fakes here!
WHO: Johnny Depp
WHY (what others think)
"When Johnny Depp sailed into the sunset at the end of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, the quirky heartthrob capped one of the most lucrative trilogies in movie history. Hollywood enthusiastically surrendered, handing him the lead role in Tim Burton's big-screen musical adaptation of Sweeney Todd without hearing him sing a note. Risky, dark, kooky: music to our ears" (EW, Jeff Labreque)
WHAT WE THINK:
Johnny Depp has definitely had a wonderful year professionally speaking, what with Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End grossing an impressive $115 million in its opening weekend alone, and then cashing in an impressive $961 million worldwide. Depp also began his sixth collaboration with Tim Burton by taking up the lead part in the dark and grizzly Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. On the whole, Johnny Depp is one of the most iconic actors of our time, with immense versatility, a powerful intellect and a strong mastery of any and all human emotions, which he delivers with heart-felt, intoxicating intensity. His acting is always a treat, whether he chooses to portray a spunky pirate or a crazed, Monte Cristo-like avenging angel. He completely deserves all the praise that goes out to him and he's truly one of the most entertaining actors out there.
WHO: Angelina Jolie
WHY(what others think):
"Whatever happened in India [she was threatened by a terrorist movement while shooting for the drama A Mighty Heart] - and whatever she's wearing in Beowulf - her performances in 2007 were far more interesting than her private life. A nice change of pace". (EW, Benjamin Svetkey)
WHAT WE THINK:
Angie has definitely had a busy year - and I say that while being fully aware that her life wouldn't need movies and acting in it to be busy. But since it's good to also remember that she's an actress before being a humanitarian and...well, one of Hollywood's most hunted celebrities - so it was good to see her act again and to exchange the personal drama for some big-screen drama. It's also funny that she had to strip down to...well, some computer-generated curves and not much apart from that in order to catch the public eye in Beowulf, but she's neither the first nor the last to have done that, so we forgive her. "In A Mighty Heart, Jolie strapped on a prosthetic pregnancy belly, donned a curly wig, and delivered the sort of heart-wrenching turn that reminded audiences why she won that Academy Award (for 1999's Girl, Interrupted ) in the first place. In other words, she acted" says EW. Gotta go with them on this one.
