A zoo set up in a small town in the Gaza Strip has recently welcomed a pair of twin lion cubs. The people in charge of looking after them say that the tiny male and female are both healthy and active, and that their mom is taking good care of them.

The cubs' parents arrived in the city of Beit Lahiya all the way from Egypt as illegal immigrants (i.e. they were smuggled into Gaza) about for years ago.

Since then, they have grown accustomed to life at the local zoo. Still, odds are they would much prefer to live in the wild, together with others of their kind.

Today tells us that the two cubs were born this past Monday. Their arrival was officially announced by Hamas authorities on Tuesday.

The cubs haven't even opened their eyes yet, but keepers at the Gaza Strip zoo have already come up with names for them. Thus, they will from now on be referred to as Fajr and Sjel, which translate as “dawn” and “clay,” respectively.
