The current gaming space is dominated by the first-person shooter genre and other types of games, regardless of the quality they deliver, are struggling to make an impact because players pay little attention to them.

Tony Hawk, who is one of the best-known skateboard athletes in the world and a consultant on the video game series that bears his name, told IGN that, “When our game was hitting really hard there were roughly 10-15 top games that were go-tos.

“Now there are only three or four that are the standard. If you’re not a first-person shooter at this point you’re kind of struggling. If you’re not Call of Duty, you’re not Halo, it’s super tricky out there.”

The upcoming Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD will try to buck this trend by making the entire development process less expensive and by launching the game via Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network for a lower price point.

Hawk added, “The dream for me is to release this as the base line for other best-of levels, but mostly so we can set a foundation and release new stuff. I would love to still be here and take advantage of new consoles as they come.”

He suggested that the development team was already thinking about the possibilities that the upcoming Wii U from Nintendo would open up for the Tony Hawk skating series, but he refused to confirm that a version of the game was under development for it.

The development team at Robomondo has picked up the most interesting levels from the first two Tony Hawk titles and has remade them using an entire new engine, with just the normal controller used to direct the game.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD is at the moment set to arrive on the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the Xbox 360 from Microsoft during July of this year.
