This may be that big announcement hinted at the other day

Yesterday, I posted a short notice about how Advanced Micro Devices was planning to hold an anniversary webcast on August 23, this Saturday. Now, I can try to be a bit more specific.

The Sunnyvale, California-based company was deliberately vague in its announcement about the event scheduled for the end of the week.

That didn't stop everyone on the Internet from speculating. And what better candidate for official release than the Tonga graphics processing unit?

After all, we've been hearing about the GPU for months, and about the Radeon R9 285 graphics card for almost as long.

Even if the board isn't released, some disclosure about the chip and the card it will power would be nice. Especially with that report about how the R9 285 won't use all of those juicy 2,048 Stream processor cores.

In addition to the Tonga, the GPU called Hawaii XTX, Maui, and Iceland could make an appearance, or at least warrant a mention. In the end, it will fall to AMD Chief Gaming Scientist Richard Huddy to decide how much to disclose.

The AMD webcast will take place on Aug. 23, 2014 at 10:00 AM EDT / 9:00 AM CDT / 7:00 AM PDT.
