Three musicians from superstar metal bands are hoping "Rock Star" will do for them what it did for INXS.

Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, former Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke and former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted will team as Supernova when the CBS reality TV show returns this summer. Their quest: find a lead singer, just like INXS.

Last summer on "Rock Star," INXS picked J.D. Fortune out of a field of 16 wannabe rockers. The Aussie band went on to score a hit single and a sold out tour.

Supernova's singer could be a New Englander. "Rock Star" held local auditions for its new edition at T.T. the Bear's in Cambridge two weeks ago.

Once a singer is chosen, the newly minted band will hit the studio with producer Butch Walker of Avril Lavigne and Pink. Supernova plans to release its debut in the fall and embark on a world tour.

"I've toured with both Gilby and Jason. They're incredible musicians and I've always wanted to play with them," Lee said in a statement yesterday. "Starting a new band with old friends on worldwide television is going to be a blast, and we're going to pull out all the stops to find the most charismatic and musically talented lead singer to front Supernova. I love breaking the rules."
