The Tomb Raider HD Trilogy is getting ready to be released later this month on the PlayStation 3, so a batch of comparisons between the screenshots of the old and the new games has just appeared on the web.
The Tomb Raider franchise is seeing some big releases this year, not only in terms of
the new reboot, called simply
Tomb Raider, that will appear near the start of the holiday season, but also with the Tomb Raider HD trilogy.
The collection, originally developed by Crystal Dynamics and now being reworked in high definition by Buzz Monkey, is set to appear at the end of the month, exclusively for the PlayStation 3.
The trilogy includes two games released for the PlayStation 2, Tomb Raider Legend and Tomb Raider Anniversary, as well as the newer Tomb Raider Underworld, already launched for the PS3 almost three years ago.
In order to really showcase how much things have changed, Buzz Monkey and Crystal Dynamics have unleashed a batch of screenshots comparing the original, PlayStation 2 versions of the games, with the newer, remastered ones.
As you can see, the draw distance has been vastly improved, shadowing is much more pronounced while the heroine of the series, Lara Croft, has received a lot of attention to her distinct features.
According to the two studios, the games will use the original assets and textures that were launched with the PC and Xbox versions of the games, but with added care to make them look as smooth as possible when running in 720p at 30fps.
"We didn't have to redraw much material, just stay as true to the original games as possible. Texture resolution is improved where appropriate, but we wanted to preserve the classic game experience, so we didn't mess with the vintage mojo," said Crystal Dynamics' Brand Director Karl Steward to
CVG.
The Tomb Raider HD Trilogy will appear later this month, with all three games on a single Blu-ray disc exclusively for the PlayStation 3.
