By their very nature, PNDs (GPS-enabled personal navigation devices) are not exactly very tough, extremely long periods of use and rough environments taking quite a toll on their case and, ultimately, on the way they actually operate. For this reason, the TomTom company has just released the PRO series of GPS navigators, whose features make them perfectly suited for the mobile workforce.
Both models share pretty much the same form factor, with the same ruggedized sleeve for added durability and protection, and they also include an interesting menu lock option, which helps drivers eliminate any unwanted distraction.
Moreover, the new PRO navigators include such features as the TomTom Map Share (TomTom's map improvement technology that allows users to access the most-up-to-date map information available), the "Help Me!" emergency resources menu, millions of points of interest and TomTom's Latest Map Guarantee. They also offer a pin lock feature, for an increased level of security.
Additionally, the more advanced (and more expensive) PRO 8000 model includes a couple of extras, such as the IQ Routes (TomTom's proprietary routing technology), Advanced Lane Guidance, Voice Address Input and Bluetooth handsfree calling. This model also packs an FM transmitter, for broadcasting the voice instructions directly through the audio system of the vehicle.
"We are pleased to offer a product which speaks directly to the needs of our business and enterprise partners," said Tom Murray, vice president of market development, regarding the launch of the new PRO series. "With the unique features the PRO Series offers, TomTom is helping today's mobile workforces to travel more efficiently and more safely than ever before.", he continued.
The TomTom PRO 4000 and 8000 GPS navigators have rather mid-range price points, the first selling for around 330 US dollars, while the latter going as high as 460 dollars.
