Fashion designer “casually” lets the big news slip in interview

Fashion designer and filmmaker Tom Ford is a married man now: he and longtime partner Richard Buckley have tied the knot, as Ford himself confirms in a new interview. The two have been together for 27 years and have a son.

Though he’s very outspoken when it comes to certain aspects of his personal life, Tom didn’t announce his wedding like celebrities tend to do, either through a press release or on social media. Instead, he “casually” let it slip in an interview, Vogue magazine reports.

It happened during a conversation with Kinvara Balfour at the Regent Street Apple Store the other night, with Ford mentioning that he was “married now.” Talk about dropping a bomb.

“I lost so many friends in college – I would say more than half of my closest friends. Richard, my partner of 27 years, had also gone through something also quite tough in his life. We are now married which is nice. I know that was just made legal in the UK which is great; we were married in the States,” Ford says.

He doesn’t mention when the wedding took place or if there was a big reception afterwards or who was on the guestlist so, for all we know, this could have taken place some time ago.

The bottom line is that they’re happy – and from what Ford says, they have been so since they first met at a fashion show back in the ‘80s.

“I went to a fashion show and this silver-haired guy was staring at me with these piercing water-blue eyes. It scared me because I absolutely saw and knew my entire future,” Ford said in a recent interview.

They only married recently (or so we assume), but Tom and Richard had already done the “through sickness and in health” part of the marriage vows. That’s because three years into their relationship Richard was diagnosed with cancer and was told it might be fatal.

He survived but, Ford would often joke in interviews, that meant their relationship was “special” from the start because they only had dates in the hospital ward.

The interview in which he spoke most candidly about the romance was a 2011 Out piece, which also featured them on the cover, with Tom kissing Richard on the cheek. Tom broached the topic of monogamy and said he was baffled that his straight friends were amazed he was still with Richard after all those years.

To him, he said, Richard was his true soulmate and they were together for life.
